Gift Idea: American Classicist

The southeast chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture has published a third generation of American Classicist. This is your chance to add it to your library or give it as a gift before the printing sells out (again).

Philip Trammel Shutze designed over 750 architectural works between 1912 and 1968. He was a graduate of Georgia Tech and spent a year at Columbia University before winning the Rome Prozie and traveling to Rome. He studied in Rome for five years.

Upon his return to America, Shutze worked for Mott and Schmidt in New York. Their commissions included townhouses for prominent families like the Astors, Morgans and Vanderbilts. Shutze also worked for F. Burrall Hoffman whose masterpiece is Vizcaya in Miami.

Shutze’s studies at Georgia Tech, Columbia University, Rome and his work in respected firms prepared him to return to Georgia where he practiced in the classical and traditional styles. This book by Dr. Elizabeth Meredith Dowling celebrates his most important work.

The book features a new introduction by Dr. Dowling plus it’s packed with images, drawings and illustrations to accompany Dr. Dowling’s thoughtful analysis of Shutze’s work. This is a limited printing. The out-of-print cost for these books can be a small fortune so get your new copy now while they’re still in stock.

Leave a comment below if you can think of a house or commercial building in the southeast that was designed by Shutze. There are many remaining and some are very well known.
