2022 Phoenix Flies Events Now Open

Phoenix Flies is an annual celebration of historic buildings, landscapes and neighborhoods presented by the Atlanta Preservation Center. The City Seal of Atlanta includes a Phoenix, the mythological bird cyclically reborn from ashes. This symbolizes the rebuilding of the city after it was burned at the end of the Civil War.

The 1847 date shown on the left side of the seal is the date Atlanta was first incorporated. The 1865 date on the right side signifies the end of the Civil War and the beginning of the new Atlanta. Resurgens is Latin for “rising again.”

Phoenix Flies is a commentary on the success of the city and celebration of its history. It runs from March 5th through the 27th and features free access to guided tours in many Atlanta buildings. There are also free in-person and virtual lectures for you to enjoy.

Many of the buildings open during Phoenix Flies for guided tours are not open or don’t feature guided tours through the rest of the year. This is a great opportunity to tour the city to learn more about its history and culture. Click the button below or the image above for a link to the 2022 Phoenix Flies catalog of events. Both should open a new browser window for you.

Tickets for the events are available beginning at 10 AM today - Friday 18 February 2022. The tickets for all the events (tours and lectures) are available through Eventbrite. We suggest using the catalog to identify tours and lectures before you go to the registration page. Click the following button to access the registration page. The button should open a new browser window for you.

Just reading through the catalog is educational. You might find a building you’ve passed for years is open for you to learn more and explore.

We hope to see you at some of the events!
