APC Phoenix Flies
The Atlanta Preservation Center hosts an annual series of tours, open houses and education events called Phoenix Flies each spring. The APC was founded in 1979 to promote the preservation of Atlanta's architecturally, historically and culturally significant buildings, neighborhoods and landscapes through education and advocacy. The Phoenix Flies events take place throughout March.
The phoenix in the event title references the City of Atlanta’s rebirth from the ashes of Sherman’s March to the Sea when Atlanta was burned in late 1864.
To this day, Atlanta’s official seal features a phoenix rising from its ashes with “resurgens” at the top. Resurgens is Latin for “rising again”. 1847 is the date Atlanta was first incorporated and 1865 is the end of the Civil War.
While some of Atlanta was burned at the end of the Civil War, the city has much to offer in the way of history and tradition. Thanks to the APC, you can visit many sites throughout the city.
We’ve attended many tours and presentations during Phoenix Flies over the years. It gives us a chance to visit and learn about buildings we drive by and the communities who use them.
Many of the buildings open during Phoenix Flies for guided tours are not open or don’t feature guided tours through the rest of the year. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the city, its history and its culture.
Some of the tours have very limited capacity. We’ve had to try over a few years to get tickets early enough to join tours for a few of the landmarks. You can avoid that challenge by making a plan:
Review the list of buildings which will be open to determine which you would like to visit.
Check whether the date and time will be convenient. (Some tours on weekdays may overlap your other obligations.)
Make a list of tickets you’d like to reserve and place your order when tickets become available.
Be sure to attend or return your tickets as early as possible before the events if you learn that you won’t be able to use your tickets. Volunteers share their time and expertise to make the tours and events possible so wasting tickets is extremely disrespectful.
Having an Atlanta Preservation Center membership makes registering easier. You get email notices about the events before the general public. You can also get discounts on other tours throughout the year. You may find it worthwhile since the memberships are relatively inexpensive.

We host events throughout the year. Some are informal discussions and some are more detailed courses intended to help you enjoy a more healthy, comfortable and efficient home.
We’d be delighted if you’d join our learning community so we can share these gatherings with you. We’d like to know what you think about the topics we’re discussing. If you’re interested, please complete the form below and we’ll be in touch.
