The residential building code sets the standard for the safety and performance of our homes. Though we're impacted by the code every day, few people understand it… or even know where to find the language.

This introductory course will help homeowners make more informed decisions about home maintenance and improvement - protecting your health, comfort and investment in your home. This course will help professionals avoid liability in their work and serve as better advocates to/resources for home owners. (We realize “professionals” are also “home owners”.)

We'll show you how to find code language - you can check when someone tells you something is "required by the code" or "doesn't meet the code". We'll help you avoid inappropriate descriptions of spaces and components. You'll be able to use the code as a guide for maintenance and improvement. You'll also be able to use the code as a guide for responding to home inspection report items.

This course will help you better understand and apply the building code whether your perspective is home owner or real estate professional. We'll review…

::  The Model Codes Used by Most Jurisdictions

::  How to Access a Free Version of the Model Codes

::  Scope of the Code: What it Governs and What it Does Not

::  How to Determine What Code Governs a Property

::  Where to Find Code Language

::  How the Code is Organized

::  Key Safety Provisions of the Code

::  Key Performance Provisions of the Code

::  How the Code Governs Building Systems Like Structure, Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing

We'll spend the bulk of our time reviewing the key safety/performance provisions with you - the language that guides the design of our houses and thus, how we live in them. We'll help translate the code language into "plain English" and help make the code accessible to you so you can find code language for yourself. We invite your questions as we go through the course and we'll provide a handout to all who register.

What people are saying.

“I thought the course was incredibly informative! I almost feel like an architect now! My brother is one in Chicago and my husband is a contractor. Now, I can talk with them intelligently. Thank you so very much for this professional presentation.”

“I am an estimator for a builder so it is helpful to know right where to go to look up codes and the websites that were given were great.”
