Gift Idea

A local nonprofit is working on a project that offers a thoughtful and endearing gift idea. We think the project will be widely known and enjoyed for generations. Don’t miss your chance to participate.

The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation is partnering with UGA Press to publish a book about architecture in Georgia. Titled Architecture of the Last Colony, it will include preservation stories of important buildings in Georgia.

Found Far Afield
To underscore how widely these books are read and circulated, we’re sharing some images from a trip Ryan made to Inverness, Scotland. Inverness is hours north of Glasgow and Edinburgh in the Highlands of Scotland.

Inverness is a beautiful city. The downtown is walkable and easy to tour with many sights, shops and restaurants. You can sign up for a tour bus to see more of the city or you can just enjoy life along the river.

Ryan visited Leakey’s Bookshop and spent some time looking through their collection.

They have a broad selection that was interesting to look through. There are some titles common to American bookshops and libraries though there are a significant number that you wouldn’t easily find outside the United Kingdom.

While looking through the architecture section, he spotted a familiar title. The tall book with the dark spine in the center of the shelf is William R. Mitchell’s J. Neel Reid: Architect…. published by the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation.

Before you ask, yes, Ryan bought a stack of books on English and Scottish design. He had them shipped home rather than carrying on with them in tow.

A New Project = A Gift Opportunity
The new Architecture of the Last Colony book will be written by noted architecture historians and edited by Georgia Trust President & CEO Mark McDonald. To fund the book, the Trust has launched a campaign called Preservation in Print.

Patrons of the campaign will receive signed copies and have their names printed in the book as people who made the project possible. This is a great gift opportunity for a person interested in architecture.

At this time, the patron levels available are as follows:

Mid-Century Modern $500

Victorian $1,000

Greek Revival $2,500

Regency $5,000

Georgian $10,000

If the Mid-Century patron level is a bit much for you, consider pooling your resources. For example, ten real estate agents could give their broker the patron level as a gift for $50/person. A family could give a group gift to a family member.

Will You Be a Patron?
Architecture of the Last Colony will be a full-color book released in 2023 in celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Georgia Trust. There is limited space for patron listings so please sign up now.

Patronage submissions must be presented by September 1, 2022 – or until there’s no room remaining. Use the button below to visit the patron submissions page.

Proceeds from the book will be used to support Georgia Trust preservation programs. We’re looking forward to the publication and hope you’ll be a part of it.

Please leave a comment below to share your thoughts – are you interested in becoming a patron? Is a shared or group gift more attractive to you?
