James Marlow Named Southface Institute President

Congratulations to Southface Institute! Southface named James Marlow as its new President. He’ll assume the new role on May 16th. We’re very happy for James and our friends at Southface.

We’re happy to count James Marlow as a friend and mentor.

James realized the challenges in the growing industry of distributed solar power generation (using solar panels) was similar to the challenges he faced while working in the computing industry for IBM and Yahoo.

He co-founded Radiance Solar in 2007 and set about applying the lessons he’d learned. Though James was busy growing his business in a market that faced regulatory, technical and education challenges, James continued to serve as a volunteer when people or organizations needed his guidance.

Many people would not have made the time to volunteer though James remained available to share the lessons he’s learned and help others.

We’ve known James for about ten years. Ryan began serving on the Environment and Natural Resources Policy Committee at the Georgia Chamber of Commerce. James is a long-serving member.

James serves on that committee with other prominent members of the energy sector. He’s always been objective, realistic and approached the discussion with a spirit of partnership.

It’s been an education to see the members of the committee each offering their insight and guidance with deference to one another. It comes from a shared understanding that we’re working together to find the best balance of solutions that will be applied through long-term planning.

James’ work on that committee and his other volunteer positions has been a big part of that education. As a solar energy advocate, his work could be disruptive though he’s always taken a broader, more inclusive approach.

About Southface
Southface Institute was founded on 1978 with a mission to “promote sustainable homes, workplaces and communities through education, research, advocacy and technical assistance.”. In the course of this work, Southface has partnered with an impressive network of nonprofits, businesses, government agencies, universities and technical experts.

In addition to its work supporting regulatory efforts at all levels of government, Southface also trains professionals and interested parties. Ryan is a graduate of the Southface HERS Rater training and other programs.

You can learn more about the training offered by Southface on the institute’s website though you should also know you can contact them to solve a problem that’s not listed in their training or resources. The Institute has staff that frequently speaks in response to specific community issues. They can also help you address a property-specific issue or help you find a qualified professional.

Southface is located at 241 Pine Street in Atlanta. The Southface office is a model of sustainable design and features a training room in which we’ve spent many mornings and afternoons in various discussions and trainings over the years. You can schedule a tour of the campus to learn more about the facilities as a possible model for projects in your area.

Southface recently expanded with the addition of a campus in Sarasota, Florida. It’s also a model facility you can visit for inspiration.

In Conclusion
We look forward to supporting James’ work at Southface and we’re delighted he’s accepted the role. He’ll be a great steward for the important work Southface conducts and a powerful advocate. Best wishes to James in his new role!
