Each year brings a collection of interesting conferences that provide opportunities for learning, fellowship and re-focusing on priorities. Many “industry” conferences are open to the public and offer beginner courses appropriate for folks without technical knowledge. We hope this list of conferences will inspire you to find a conference and get involved!
Arranged by date, earliest first:
The International Builders Show (IBS), presented by the National Association of Home Builders, is the largest show in the home building industry. It will be held January 22-24 in Las Vegas. http://www.buildersshow.com
TED2013 will be held Feb 25 – March 1 in Palm Beach, California. The price of attendance is $7,500 and it’s sold out though there’s typically a broadcast from the event so you can watch it on the TED website. There are a couple of other events for which you can register and there are many local events across the globe. http://www.ted.com/pages/registration
The RESNET Conference is focused on home energy rating, energy modeling and improving the energy efficiency of existing homes. The 2013 conference will be held Feb 27 – March 1 at the Orlando World Center Marriott.
Greenprints is presented by the Southface Energy Institute in Atlanta, GA each year. It’s focused on sustainable design and development. In 2013, the conference will be held March 13-14 in Atlanta. http://www.greenprints.org/
The EcoFocus Film Festival celebrates environmental films. It will be held March 21-24 in Athens, Georgia.
The ACI (Affordable Comfort, Inc.) National Home Performance Conference will be held April 30 – May 3 in Denver. http://www.affordablecomfort.org/events/2013-aci-national-home-performance-conference
The LOHAS Forum will be held June 18-20 in Boulder, CO (just north of Denver). LOHAS is an acronym for “Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability”. http://www.lohas.com/
The American Institute of Architects’ National Convention will be June 20-22 in Denver. Many state components of the American Institute of Architects also have conferences if you’d rather enjoy local contacts and a more focused event.
The Remodeling Show, presented by Hanley Wood, will be held October 15-18 at McCormick Place in Chicago.
The National Preservation Conference doesn’t yet have a date for 2013 though it will be held in Indianapolis, Indiana.
You can also find local preservation conferences and events. For example, the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation offers “rambles” – organized visits to a specific area of the state that allow participants to tour significant homes and buildings, enjoy interactive lectures and sample local restaurants.
Many of the conferences also offer an exposition or trade floor with exhibits, booths and displays from vendor sponsors. If you just bought a pass to the expo, you could spend the day wondering the floor of a larger show just looking at products and services (without sitting in any of the education sessions).
Please leave a comment to let us know if we’ve missed any conferences or events. The conferences we’ve listed are in the United States – feel free to mention conferences in other countries. What conferences and events would you like to attend in 2013? Thanks!
